Teach me to hammer...

So a question I get asked a lot is "do you teach Photoshop?".  My answer:  "...would you ask a master carpenter to teach you how to hammer?"  Photoshop is a tool, an amazing, wonderful, dynamic, addicting and inspiring tool but a tool all the same.  There is no art button, create an amazing ad button or compose an awesome picture button.  Anyone can learn to use a "hammer", but its the skills and discipline that goes along with it that you have to learn.

I usually start with composition, lighting and cinematic storytelling.  Then I move to anatomy, light studies and colour.  These aren't short cuts in Photoshop.  They are skills that require time and practice to learn.  I am fortunate to know some amazing folks in advertising.  People that have honed their skills so they now top the award shows.  The skills they have didn't happen over night nor did they shortcut their way there.  They worked hard, studied, listened and learned from those around them.  Two of my friends, Jay Russell and Wade Alger went on from being a young team to now being the Chief Creative Officer of GSD&M (Jay) and Vice President Group Creative Director at The Martin Agency over the Geico campaign (Wade).  Now these are just two creatives I know who have worked hard to get where they are.  Photography, digital art, art direction and writing all have one thing in common.  There are tools to help you do these things however the best tool is between your ears.

Discipline yourself to learn everything you can.  Listen and learn from the mistakes and achievements of others.  And always always always strive to do it better....
